Introduction

Circaevum: A “Bicycle for the Mind”

Doug Engelbart, the man who famously demonstrated many of the fundamental elements of modern personal computing in his 1968 “Mother of all Demos”, emphasized an approach to Intelligence Augmentation (IA), as opposed to AI, as a way of designing digital experiences. Rather than simply offloading cognitive tasks from a human as many AI experiences do, the goal is to design digital experiences in such a way that sharpen the human intellect, and enhance the human’s ability to think critically.

Steve Jobs made a beautiful analogy that inspired Apple’s design perspective, describing the computer experience they care about building as “Bicycles for the Mind”. A bicycle is such a simple technology that improved human efficiency in such a beautiful way, as it enhances the individual’s ability to travel larger distances fully under the power of their own output. Similarly in this age of AI, we seek to build tools that enhance the user’s natural cognitive abilities, and keep them as the conscious agent at the helm rather than outsourcing our thought processes to machines.

Circaevum is a digital experience designed in this light. Taking a First-Principles approach to several fundamental cognitive processes, Circaevum makes use of several cognitive techniques (primarily around spatial processing) to construct a spatial clock that facilitates a new mode of thinking - part virtual experience, part mnemonic device - focused on driving balance to the user’s Circadian Rhythm, Long-Term Thinking, and general Time Management.

In this Whitepaper we will walk through our design philosophy, along with our plans for the development and delivery of Circaevum.
